This website is the online presence of the Skeleton Science Exhibition developed by Dr. Kirsty McCarrison of
the Durham University Library's Learning Team and Professor Charlotte Roberts
of Durham University's Archaeology Department. The exhibit was originally
shown at Durham University's 'The Old Fulling Museum of Archaeology' during
2012/13. Since then it has been exhibited at the Thackray Medical Museum
at Leeds, West Yorkshire (2014/15) and is now open at Bede's World in
Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
The exhibition introduces the various methods used to scientifically analyze archaeological human skeletons, with a behind the scenes look at how the study of human remains reveals insights into how people lived in the past, including their age at death, health and diet. The exhibit was designed to appeal to all ages, and additional materials have been produced to support teaching in schools across a range of topics including biology, history, and chemistry.
